Hands-On Bamboo Training in Belega Village, Bali

Experience village life in Bali and learn about Bamboo Carpentry & Joinery, Treatment, Design and Model-making and Building Construction of a small 1.5m X 1.5m structure with Balinese Bamboo Craftsmen...

Attend just 3 days, 6, 10 or stay for the whole 12 days

TIme: 9.30m to 4pm daily (Some Saturdays, Not Sundays)

A hands-on experience developing confidence around the basic concepts and techniques of working practically with bamboo.

Lunch included (vegetarian/non-veg/ halal available)

Schedule :

Day 1: Carpentry for furniture - hole join, fish mouth, Y-join

Day 2: Factory Tour - harvesting & treatment, hyperboloid platform, local building tour.

Day 3: Bamboo Design & Models - bamboo design principles, make sticks for model-making & design for the build

Day 4: Construction Basics - Make foundations and load-test bamboos

Day 5: Design Layout - frame/truss construction on the ground

Day 6: Lift and Join Structure - Pinching Beams & Squaring 

Day 7: Install sub-floor; Bending Bamboo - Rab-rab technique for arches

Day 8: Install Arches; Bamboo Flooring - Install Smashed Bamboo Flooring

Day 9: Curve/Bundle Beam - Make & Install Lidi & Dowels; Make Splits for rafters

Day 10: Roof & Roof Lining - Install rafters (usuk) & sering (roof lining)

Day 11: Measure and make roofing canvas

Day 12: Continue - wax and fit roofing canvas

If you want to do an extra week of roofing and fit out, you can enquire but its not part of the program currently.

Full Class Break-Down

Day 1:

Bamboo Carpentry & Joinery Skills:
You will gain experience with bamboo joinery and carpentry techniques and make a small item of bamboo furniture.
- tools for working with bamboo; tool safety and maintenance
You will learn about:

- how to make a hole (T) join, a "fish-mouth" join and modified fish-mouth or "Y" join

- use of rattan/string and doweling to finish and strengthen a join

- splitting bamboo and lashings to make "gallar" slats for various purposes

- bending bamboo using "rab-rab" (cuts) technique

Day 2:
Bamboo Factory Tour and Design Intro:
- See a bamboo treatment factory, tour some local bamboo buildings and learn about designing with bamboo
- Make a hyperboloid tower platform for treating bamboo using Vertical Soak Diffusion (VSD)
You will learn about:

- Basic bamboo treatment methods 

- Types of bamboo & their structural/design suitabilities

- Design specifications and conditions to build for

- Do's and Don'ts of bamboo building

Day 3

Bamboo Design and Model-Making for Bamboo Construction:
An Introduction to Designing with Bamboo to make a building - Design Principles for working with bamboo as a construction material through making a miniature to-scale bamboo construction design model.
You will learn how to:

- make sticks from bamboo suitable for model-making

- choose a scale for your model and apply that to a design-idea

- come up with a design idea and apply design principles to make a build-able bamboo concept

- measure and calculate construction material costs for your design

- understand the construction process for making a bamboo building

Day 4
Construction Basics - Make foundations and load-test bamboos
How to make foundations for a small bamboo building - How to know the strength and capacity of your bamboo material
You will learn how to:

- measure out foundations and square off

- bend and place metal in the foundation; mix and pour cement

- practically load-test bamboo 

Day 5 
Design Layout - frame/truss construction on the ground
Transferring the design model to a mal/template on-the-ground/on-site

You will learn how to:

- lay out measurements for the template
- measure and cut bamboo
- Join bamboo using hole join and fish mouth join
- make bamboo nails and fix joins
- reinforce joins with rope/string


Day 6
Lift and Join Structure - Pinching Beams & Squaring
The process and techniques for raising a structure and supporting it during the construction process
You will learn how to:
- use bamboo supports and rope
- temporarily tie/secure the structure
- ensure "squareness" and balance
- correct placement of bamboo curvature accordingly for the parts of the construction (pillars, pinching beams, sub-floor)
- fixing the structure with bolts/nail and rope

Day 7
Install sub-floor; Bending Bamboo - Rab-rab technique for arches
Laying out the sub-floor beams and bending bamboo by cutting "wedges" from one side of the bamboo
You will learn:
- spacing and leveling for the sub-floor
- make a template for an arch
- technique for making "rab" cuts to bend bamboo
- technique for applying epoxy glue and fixing the arches

Day 8
Install Arches; Bamboo Flooring - Install Smashed Bamboo Flooring
Learning about support for a structure and reinforcement of arches and constructing a floor
You will learn: 
- fixing technique and angled fish mouth join
- reinforcement of arch with bamboo split
- smashing bamboo (making pelupuh)
- fixing flooring to the structure

Day 9
Curve/Bundle Beam - Make & Install Lidi & Dowels; Make Splits for rafters
Assembling bundles of bamboo sticks to form a "lidi" structural beam and reinforcing bamboo ends with dowels. Making flat rafters for parabolic roof structure.
You will learn:
- method for making continuous curve beam & installation

- shaping and inserting dowels into bamboo ends
- make split bamboo


Day 10
Roof & Roof Lining - Install rafters & roof lining
- measure, cut & fix rafters and lining to structure

Classes are facilitated with Bamboo Master-craftsmen in Belega - the village of world-famous Bamboo Builders - 35 minutes south-east of Ubud: 9.30am to 4pm daily (except Sundays and sometimes Saturdays)

Lunch is included. Please advise of any special dietary requirements.

(You are welcome to arrive earlier at 9 if you'd like to learn knife/tool sharpening)
