3 Day Bamboo Workshop
Come and experience village life in Bali and learn about bamboo Carpentry & Joinery and/or Model-making and Bamboo Design with Balinese Bamboo Craftsmen for a 3 day workshop in Belega (25min South-East of Ubud) from 9am to 4pm:
Day 1:
Bamboo Carpentry & Joinery Skills:
A hands-on experience developing confidence around the basic concepts and techniques of working practically with bamboo. Through this program you will gain experience with bamboo joinery and carpentry and make an item of bamboo furniture.
You will learn about:
- tools for working with bamboo; tool safety and maintenance
- how to make a hole (T) join, a "fish-mouth" join and a "Y" join
- use of rattan/string and doweling to finish and strengthen a join
- splitting bamboo and lashings to make "gallar" slats for various purposes
- bending bamboo using "rab-rab" (cuts) technique
Day 2:
Bamboo Factory Tour and Design Intro:
- See a bamboo treatment factory, tour some local bamboo buildings and learn about designing with bamboo
- be inspired to make your own bamboo design model
You will learn about:
- Basic bamboo treatment methods
- Types of bamboo & suitabilities
- Design specifications and conditions to build for
- Do's and Don'ts of bamboo building
Day 3
Bamboo Design and Model-Making for Bamboo Construction:
An Introduction to Designing with Bamboo to make a building - Design Principles for working with bamboo as a construction material through making a miniature to-scale bamboo construction design model.
You will learn how to:
- make sticks from bamboo suitable for model-making
- choose a scale for your model and apply that to a design-idea
- come up with a design idea and apply design principles to make a build-able bamboo concept
- measure and calculate construction material costs for your design
- understand the construction process for making a bamboo building
Program Duration is 3 days.
We do adapt the class structure to the needs and interests of participants - and if you would like to focus on a particular area/topic for all 3 days it can be arranged. You can also join for 6 days or longer programs (3 weeks - 3 months... see out website bamboocreative.org for more details.)
Classes are facilitated with Bamboo Master-craftsmen in Belega - the village of world-famous Bamboo Builders - 25 minutes south-east of Ubud: 9am to 4pm daily.
Lunch is included. Please advise of any special dietary requirements
